Do you have white teeth? And how many did you spent on your dental care? "There is nothing worse than not having access to local dental services and that has been a problem in our part of the world for some time. In this article, I would like to talk something about dental service!

During school months, Irvine and dental assistant Lendita Istogu focus on making stops at area schools. Their goal is to visit schools twice during the school year — once at the beginning and once toward the end of the year to ensure that students get regular checkups. In the summer months, they'll stop by community centers, shelters and health fairs to provide services.

Though it is the only dental van in Will County, the Illinois Department of Public Health funds 48 community-based preventive dental health programs across the state. Of those, 42 use portable equipment and six use mobile units such as in Will County. In addition to the six mobile units they help fund, state public health officials said they are aware of another three mobile dental facilities in the state.

The state-funded mobile dental programs help serve 160,000 children a year. In Will County, more than 700 patients visited the mobile dental unit during its first year of operation, said Will County dental program manager DeeAnn Bednowicz.

She noted that taking the county's dental services on the road makes it easier for those who most need the care. The county still operates a dental clinic at its building at 1106 Neal Ave. in Joliet, but for some just getting to the clinic is a problem.

"It's hard for us to get our kids to dental appointments," said Kyle's mother, Linda.

Though she is vigilant in making both of her boys get regular dental exams, taking time off work for a routine dental visit now would have been difficult, she said.

"I have to prioritize my appointments," she said, noting her husband has suffered a serious illness. "I could get them to the dentist, but I would have to take a day off work to get them there, and that's real difficult right now."

Schools are given notice of when the dental van will be available, and permission slips are sent home with students. If parents want their child to be examined by the dentist, they simply fill out the form and provide any dental insurance information if available. The county provides services on a sliding scale and accepts all insurance and the state medical card.
